With its tree-lined streets and wide variety of Sears and Craftsman-style homes, the modest community of Mordecai literally feels like a blast from the past.

Former Hurricanes player perished in Russian plane crash

The following column was written Sept. 7, after learning of the crash of a plane carrying players and staff of Lokomotiv, a team in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League. Among the 44 people killed was Josef Vasicek, who spent six seasons in the Triangle playing for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have honored the memory of Vasicek with a memorial display in the team’s locker room, and the team will wear shoulder patches with his No. 63 on their uniforms all season.

Nov. 13
Raleigh Fall Festival 5K/10K
The inaugural Raleigh Fall Festival 5K and 10K, formerly the Old Reliable Run, will be held Nov. 13 at Nash Square in downtown Raleigh. The 10K race begins at 1 p.m., and the 5K race begins at 2:30 p.m. There’s also a 100-Yard Kids Dash for those 10 and younger.
