A birthday feast

I’ve mentioned in previous columns that my oldest daughter was born on Christmas. So it’s no surprise that the holiday season commences rather early at our house as she begins the annual countdown to her birthday. Typically, we have a party before Dec. 25, which allows her to celebrate with friends. But in doing this, I’ve inadvertently set myself up for having to come up with two different birthday cakes and — because breakfast is her favorite meal — something special to serve on Christmas morning. As I pondered the menus for the upcoming big days, I decided to rethink some classics.
