Johnston Health and Rex Healthcare have formalized a partnership that provides comprehensive cancer care for patients at facilities in Clayton and Smithfield, allowing Johnston County residents to receive the latest technologies and treatment options close to home.

Clayton Radiation Oncology and Smithfield Radiation Oncology offer expert physicians and dedicated staff. The facilities, which opened in 2010, provide access to the same care available at Rex's cancer centers in Raleigh and Wakefield, as well as at the N.C. Cancer Hospital and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill.

"The finalization of the partnership is an important step forward for cancer patients in Johnston County," says Dr. Charles Scarantino, a Rex/UNC radiation oncologist and medical director of the Clayton and Smithfield centers. "The partnership should provide comfort to cancer patients requiring radiation therapy, knowing they will have two modern radiation facilities that are close by and able to serve their needs. Moreover, the growth in the number of patients being treated in the past six to eight months is a testament to the fact that the facilities are fulfilling an important service to the people of Johnston County."

Since the facilities opened, they have almost doubled the number of patients that receive daily radiation treatments. One of Johnston Health's strategic goals is to continue to add more state-of-the-art services and facilities to diagnose and treat cancer.
