I stood on the London site where the English throne imprisoned the City of Raleigh’s namesake. In another part of London, just a few miles up the River Thames, I looked at the unmarked area of the Old Palace Yard, beneath the shadows of Westminster, where an executioner beheaded Sir Walter Raleigh for allegedly plotting against King James I.

You’ve probably heard it since childhood: No two snowflakes are alike. Credit for this discovery often is given to Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, a self-educated farmer from Jericho, Vt., who was the first person to photograph a single snowflake back in 1885.
