Small Business Spotlight: Alter Scalp Spa

Two sisters bring a novel spa experience to Raleigh

Streaming over the scalp from a curved arc, waterfall therapy turns a rinse into a rainfall at Alter Scalp Spa.

The goal at Alter Scalp Spa isn’t longer hair. It’s a longer exhale.

“We always say we want people to feel like they’ve had a little mini vacation without having to leave town,” says Shelby Vaughn, who co-founded the spa with her sister, Ashley Chambers. “Like an exhale,” Ashley chimes in. “An exhale from their normal life.”

Tucked into Raleigh’s Falls River area, Alter is among the first of its kind in the region: a spa built entirely around the scalp. With 10 private suites, a double-digit team, three signature services, its own product line, and a themed “escape” every month, the coastal-inspired space is already making waves. The head spa ritual has been a sensation abroad and on social media for some time, but locally, until recently, it was something mostly watched on a phone.

Behind the black awnings in Falls River, a coastal-inspired escape awaits.

Now, behind a heavy wooden door, a world of relaxation awaits.

Neither sister came to the idea from outside the industry. Shelby has been a hair stylist since 2015 and owns a salon in Rolesville. Ashley is an esthetician with a spa of her own. When head spas started filling the sisters’ TikTok feeds — “getting really popular in other countries,” Shelby recalls — the overlap was hard to miss.

The sisters agreed: “We should do this,” Ashley recalls. “It’s a perfect combination of what we both do.”

The location came down to geography. For their businesses, Falls River is a central point, as they both spend their days in Rolesville, and it’s convenient to Wake Forest, Raleigh, and even Cary. Also, Shelby explains, “There wasn’t anything similar in the area.”

What Alter is careful not to promise says as much about the business as what it does offer. Traditionally, scalp spas market themselves on hair growth. Alter doesn’t. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair, Shelby acknowledges, but the sisters lead with the physical and mental break itself. “We come at it more from the standpoint of taking a break for yourself,” she says, “and giving yourself the relaxation that you need.”

That thinking shaped the floor plan, too. When the sisters researched scalp spas around the United States, they found mostly open-concept spaces — one big room lined with beds. Alter went the other way, with 10 private suites.

“We wanted something with more privacy since people are dressing down, typically, underneath their blanket” on a flat-lay bed, Shelby says about the carefully cultivated, cocoonlike atmosphere. “We wanted a more spa-like environment.”

Framed in oyster shells, a mirror catches scalp technician Brianna Wilkins opening a client’s experience with the arrival ritual.

Even the name came out of that headspace … literally. The sisters wanted something simple and easy to remember, with a sense of calm built in. While they tossed around options, a catchphrase surfaced: Alter your headspace. “And we were like, ‘That’s it. That’s it,’” Shelby says. It works on two levels: The service centers on the scalp, and the hope is that guests “leave feeling lighter than they came.”

Establishing a third business while running two others is, by their own admission, a lot. Both Shelby and Ashley still work full time at their own shops (yes, really), so before opening day they leaned hard on hiring and training managers to oversee daily operations and technicians to deliver the experience.

Before the water starts, careful brushing preps the hair and scalp for the treatment ahead.

“We can’t be there every day,” Shelby says. “So we just have to trust them, and they’re handling it.” Even when the sisters aren’t there physically, they’re in constant contact with the team.

Ask who does what, and the two laugh. “It’s not defined,” they say, almost in unison. “We both know what needs to be done,” Ashley says. Shelby has young children; Ashley doesn’t. So whoever is available takes the reins, and it varies day to day.

If something needs handling at the spa in a hurry, it’s usually Ashley — “almost like the manager of the managers,” as Shelby puts it — while Shelby handles the ads, marketing, and virtual side of the business.

Were they worried about mixing family and business? Not really. “We’re going to butt heads about things,” Ashley admits, “but we’re sisters and we’re best friends at the end of the day.” Shelby finishes the thought: “And then we get over it.”

Perhaps expectedly, Alter’s most common guests are women between roughly 32 and 45 years old. The surprise has been the men. “They’re such great clients,” Shelby says. “They’re so happy, and our technicians love working with them.”

Part of Alter’s popularity with men, she suggests, is that taking time to relax is becoming increasingly normalized. Part of it is novelty, as a standard men’s haircut doesn’t always include a shampoo. A long, unhurried wash is something new, and “Who doesn’t love getting their hair washed?” Shelby asks. First-time male guests sometimes arrive with a quiet question — Do I belong here? — and leave with assurance that they do.

At Alter, the pampering reaches past the scalp and down to the fingertips, adding one more quiet moment to the hour of escape.

Services come in three tiers: the 30-minute Ritual, 45-minute Reset, and 55-minute Escape. Each has its own price point, and monthly memberships offer a locked-for-life rate starting at $80 per month.

The experience begins with an arrival ritual, then a dry scalp massage with nourishing oils. Warm waterfall therapy follows to rinse away tension, followed by a double cleanse. From there come shampoos, massage, conditioning treatments, and targeted therapies, all meant to leave both the scalp and the mind refreshed.

Every service ends with Silk Tide, a leave-in conditioning treatment suited to all hair types and the runaway best seller in Alter’s house line. “It’s almost like taking a little bit of your treatment home with you,” Shelby says. “It smells amazing, and it leaves your hair really silky soft.”

Alter’s house haircare line — with names like Shore, Current, Silk Tide, and Immerse — sits in an arched retail nook in the same coastal style that runs through the whole spa.

The sisters developed the line during construction — the long build-out, they note, gave them plenty of time to sample — and the products are made in the United States. Choosing the scents and names was, by all accounts, the most fun part. The collection includes two shampoo-and-conditioner pairings, a deep conditioning treatment, the leave-in, and a four-in-one spray. Since all hair needs are covered, there is no plan to expand the line. As with everything else at Alter, this decision has been thoughtfully made.

Which brings us to the holidays. Each month, Alter hosts a Special Edition Escape, always on a Saturday and always themed. October’s Velvet Pumpkin Escape layered a pumpkin sheet mask, hand massage, and a seasonal mocktail onto the standard service. The welcome ritual changes, too, with a new essential oil each time. A December Escape is in the works (details are still under wraps, which is half the fun), and Black Friday will bring gift card deals.

In a season built for rushing, that may be the most useful gift of all — an hour, or even 30 minutes, set aside to do nothing but breathe out and alter your headspace.
